Video: Toshiba Qosmio F750 3D laptop

TechRadar managed to get some hands-on time with the Toshiba Qosmio F750 3D laptop – the first computer in the UK to offer glasses-free 3D.

To make this happen, Toshiba has given the laptop a lenticular screen and uses a special webcam which tracks your eyes – bringing the right 3D image to you wherever you are looking on the screen.

While 3D still hasn’t made the mark manufacturers would have liked, the main problem with the technology seems to be that you have to wear glasses.

Toshiba knows this and that is why it has decided to launch its glasses-free laptop this year.

The Qosmio F750 3D laptop UK release date is August, so you haven’t got too long to decide if it is for you.

Check out our video to see the laptop in action and what are thoughts are on it.

Buying Guide: What’s the best Core i7 laptop?

Posted by latest handheld | Posted in handheld | Posted on 13-06-2011-05-2008

0

Intel’s Core i3 and Core i5 processors provide ample power for the price.

But when it comes to getting the most power for your money, nothing comes close to Intel’s high-performance Core i7 processors, especially in the latest Sandy Bridge versions.

The Core i7 has finally blurred the lines between laptop and desktop PCs and, in many cases, the prices are highly affordable.

  • What’s the best Core i3 laptop?

To help you choose the right machine for your needs, we’ve brought together four of the best Core i7-powered laptops, at prices to suit all budgets.

  • What’s the best Core i5 laptop?

Offering staggering performance and features ideal for the whole family, you won’t fi nd a more powerful range of consumer laptops.

1. MSI CX640-018UK – £512

Advent sienna 700

The combination of excellent performance, long battery life, vibrant screen and solid build in the MSI CX640-018UK makes this a fantastic all-round laptop that will suit a variety of tastes and users. Most importantly, it will handle anything you care to throw at it.

That’s thanks to its Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7-2410M and a potent Nvidia GeForce 540M graphics card, which mean that it handles multimedia and gaming just brilliantly. There’s also a power-saving mode, meaning that it’s got excellent battery life to boot.

2. Lenovo W520 – £1,501

HP pavilion dv8-1250ea

The Lenovo W520 is fairly firmly a business laptop, but it’s one that offers a lot of great features. The 1080p screen offers plenty of space to work in, especially for design professionals – something that’s complemented by the Nvidia Quadro 1000M GPU.

An Intel Core i7-2620M produces enough processing grunt to safely get you through all but the most demanding applications. With all this power, battery life isn’t as good as many laptops, but when you’re working at a desk, this is a potent machine.

3. Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch – £1,647

apple macbook pro

Apple wasted no time getting on the Sandy Bridge bandwagon, offering several configurations of its MacBook Pros, including Core i7 versions. The quad-core CPU is capable of just eating through video tasks, while an increase in graphics capabilities with an AMD Radeon 6750M means it can also deal with gaming comfortably.

The MacBook Pro aluminium unibody design is as great as ever, while the addition of the super-fast Thunderbolt connector is also a major plus for pros.

4. Kobalt Computers G150 – £1,704

Sony vaio vpc-z12v9e/x

What a beast. Intel and Nvidia are two heavyweights of the PC industry, and the Kobalt G150 laptop includes some of the two companies’ most powerful components.

A Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU is paired with a Nvidia GTX 485M, offering simply astonishing gaming performance for a laptop (as well being fast everywhere else. It doesn’t skimp on other features either, offering 6GB of RAM and a Blu-ray drive.

Unsurprisingly, it’s not super light and doesn’t get a huge amount of battery life, but those aren’t the point of a machine like this. It’s all about speed, and this is fast.

Best Intel Core i7 laptop: Verdict

There’s simply an astonishing amount of power on offer from these laptops, and they’re all capable of cutting through tough tasks without breaking a sweat.

The MSI CX640-018UK offers that power at a bargain price – it really is amazing what just over £512 can get you, so it gets our vote as the value buy, hands down. But it’s not the winner.

The MacBook Pro gets an honourable mention for packing big power into a slim and attractive design, and if you’re a Mac fan it will inevitably be your choice anyway. But it’s still not the winner.

It has to be the Kobalt G150 that’s our winner here. We wanted power from Intel’s new chips, and we got it, packed in with a killer graphics card, too. It’s a laptop that will blow you away, and though it certainly isn’t cheap, we don’t think you’d be too worried about buyer’s remorse once you were using it.

Asus unveils world’s first glasses-free 3D laptop

Posted by latest handheld | Posted in handheld | Posted on 01-06-2011-05-2008

If you are in the market for a new gaming laptop, then you may well be intrigued by the news that Asus has revealed the world’s first glasses-free 3D laptop at Computex in Taipei this week.

The Asus Republic of Gamers G53SX uses proprietary tech that lets it convert 2D visuals into 3D.

No word as yet from Asus UK on pricing or release plans, but TechRadar will be sure to bring you that news as and when we get it.

Mixed 2D-3D mode

For now, what we do know is that the laptop features something called a ‘mixed mode’, which involved one window displaying an image in 2D and another displaying the same image (or video, or game) in 3D, on-screen at the same time.

Why you would want or ever have a need for such a feature is, of course, a different thing entirely. Still, it sounds cool!

Asus’ Republic of Gamers G53SX is build around an Intel Core i7 CPU, Z68 motherboard and GeForce 560M graphics chip.

“Regular” 3D gaming is said to half the framerate that you will get running a game in good, old-fashioned 2D.

Expect more news on the pricing and availability of Asus’ new auto-stereoscopic laptop very soon.

Samsung unveils new Google Chromebook laptop

Posted by latest handheld | Posted in handheld | Posted on 11-05-2011-05-2008

Samsung has unveiled the first Chromebook – the new Series 5 laptop running which will run the Google Chrome operating system.

The ultra-slim 0.79-inch device was officially launched at the I/O conference in San Francisco, where Google lifted the lid on its plans for the web-based OS.

The Series 5 fits in with the required Chromebook specs, offering “all-day” 8.5 hour battery life and a dual-core 1.66GHz Intel Atom processor under the hood.

Web only

There’ll only be 16GB of sold-state memory on board, but with Google’s plans to make this a “web-only” device, that shouldn’t cause too much of a problem.

The laptop has a 12.6-inch, 1280 x 800 resolution screen, the option of global 3G connectivity, 802.11 WiFi, two USB ports and a HD webcam.

The Series 5 will be launched in the US on July 15th, with prices starting at $ 429, which is just over £250 in real money. No word yet on UK pricing and availability.

Dell has unveiled its latest Alienware laptops, with a refreshed M11X gaming netbook joined by the 18-inch M18X and the M14X.

The headliner is the M18X – very much a desktop replacement rather than something you’ll be carrying around with you in daily life – which apparently “lays claim to the title of the most powerful 18-inch gaming laptop in the universe”. A bold claim indeed.

The 18-incher will come with dual-graphics technology and an Intel Core i7 Extreme CPU, factory overclocked to a whopping 4GHz..

Pwn

“If you’re a gamer, you’re going to love our new family of laptops, which deliver on the features gamers care most about – uncompromised graphics performance, and lifelike 3D gaming,” said Arthur Lewis, general manager of Alienware.

“We are committed to delivering the best gaming systems for enthusiasts everywhere and we take great pride in helping them ‘pwn’, no matter where they are in the world.”

All of the laptops have HDMI 1.4 and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports, the M14X also offers up Core i7 processor options while the M11X has been updated from its already impressive specs to offer up “second-generation Intel Core i processors with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 and updated graphics featuring the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M.”

The prices start at over a grand and work their way up quickly as you pick off the best options. But this is unashamedly high-end gaming kit, so you wouldn’t expect bargain basement prices anyway.
